Ever heard of the lactose tax?

Hey budgetarians,

Are you sick of the lactose-free tax? It’s not just YOU. A recent Compare the Market Report (Sept 2023) confirms your gut feeling – there IS such a thing as a lactose-free tax. And it’s costing you $$$$

In fact, for those with a lactose sensitivity, alternative milks, cheeses and icecreams are, on average, 46.43% more expensive than the dairy originals.

SAVE MONEY (EVEN WITH LACTOSE SENSITIVITY)

In Australia, lactose-free milk is 25% more expensive that regular dairy milk. And cream? Well, if it’s even available, my local grocery has regular thickened cream for $2.80 per 300ml, whereas the lactose-free options range from $4.10-6.00 per 300ml!

In a recent blog, we showed you how you could save money by converting regular milk into low lactose milk using lactase enzymes. I’m regularly saving $8 per week using this method. Compared to commercial options, the milk that I convert myself is less sweet and tastes fabulous when blitzed with Superflora Gut Health Shakes.

We also used the same method to convert regular cream into low lactose cream, saving money but also peace of mind. There’s absolutely no reason to miss out on desert because you’re worried about the side-effects of a lactose overdose!

The only down-side is that the chemical reaction (breaking down the lactose into glucose and galactose) takes 24 hours so this isn’t an immediate solution if you need lactose-free cream IMMEDIATELY. For me, it’s become a habit. As I put the grocery shopping away each week, I add my enzymes to my milk and cream so I’ve got low lactose options available all week.

Try it! You’ll save money without compromising on taste (and potentially toilet paper if you know what I mean!!!)
